Australian Youth Championships – Nacra 15 on this weekend!
by Australian Sailing - Kate Lathouras
This weekend’s Australian Youth Championships – Nacra 15 regatta will attract a new wave of sailors from around the country, competing to be crowned the inaugural Nacra 15 National Champion and thus secure their spot on the 2017 Australian Sailing Youth Team.
Held at the Wangi RSL Amateur Sailing Club over the Easter long weekend, 14 to 17 April 2017, this regatta will see Australia’s top catamaran sailors battle it out on the Lake Macquarie waters.
Australian Sailing’s Performance Pathway Manager, Mark Robinson, is looking forward to many sailors stepping up at this regatta,
“As this is a new class, we will see sailors come from various backgrounds to compete. Given 2017 Australian Sailing Youth Team selection is based on this event, we expect to see very close racing. It also provides an opportunity for us to look at the fleet performance levels and potential as a whole from which to plan out the future for this discipline”, said Mark.
As this is the inaugural regatta, the door is open to any of the teams entered. Particular interest is being taken to those youth sailors who have had previous experience in multihulls but as this is a new class, no one has had any advantage over another.
The first shipment of Nacra 15 boats became available in December so this regatta was separated from the Australian Youth Championships held in January 2017. Darren Bundock, Australian Sailing Multihull Development Officer, has been running development camps around Australia since then in the lead up to this event. This has allowed competitors an opportunity to practice and get accustomed to the boat prior to this selection event.
The Nacra 15 class is the new worldwide youth pathway boat to the now established Olympic Nacra 17 class. The boat will eventually be sailed in the same arrangement as its senior counterpart, with only mixed crews eligible to compete, but for this regatta the crew arrangement will be open to any gender combination. The results of these Championships will be used by Australian Sailing towards selecting crews to represent Australia in the 2017 World Sailing Youth Sailing Championships.
Racing is set to commence on Friday April 14; all the action of the 2017 Australian Youth Championships – Nacra 15 can be found via the Australian Youth Championships website www.youthchamps.org.au or via the event’s Facebook Page, www.facebook.com/AusYouthChamps/.
