Club Marine Victorian Youth Championships kick off tomorrow
by Australian Sailing - Kate Lathouras
After three days of coaching from some of Australia’s finest coaches, junior and youth sailors will have an opportunity to put what they’ve learnt to the test when they compete at the Club Marine Victorian Junior and Youth Championships that kick off tomorrow at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club.
Australian Sailing’s Head of State Coaching for Victoria, Adrian Finglas, commented on the progress all the young sailors made and what he’s expecting for the next couple days,
“It’s great to see so many young sailors stepping in to new classes! The Nacra 15 is an exciting new boat for youth sailors worldwide and is the way of the future. I’d like to thank our international and interstate guest coaches and families who came over for the camp and championships. It’s great to see the professionalism and passion of our coach’s transfer to these young sailors.”
Over 150 junior and youth sailors are registered and ready to compete at Victoria’s premier junior and youth sailing championships and after three days of coaching the battles are expected to be fierce.
Here’s who to watch at this year’s event:
Victorian duo, Laura Harding and Eleanor Grimshaw, have their eyes set on the win at this event. After a stellar performance at the Youth Championships, held in South Australia earlier this year the pair earned the female 420 spot on the Australian Sailing Youth Team. As the only Victorian to be selected for the youth team the pair are expected to perform quite well at this event.
Newest members of the Victorian Institute of Sport (Sailing), Josh Galland and Ethan Hosking, have been training hard since their debut as a team last year. They’ve since competed together at the 29er and Youth Nationals placing 6th and 4th, respectively. This pair is certainly one to keep an eye on this weekend.
There’s sure to be tough competition in the Laser Radial fleet with most entrants finishing within 5- 10 places of each other at the Australian Youth Championships and the Laser Nationals earlier this year so the door is open to who could take the podium positions this weekend.
The Nacra 15’s are the ‘new kids on the block’ with this being the first time the class has been included in any regatta nationwide. This event precedes the Australian Youth Championships – Nacra 15 that are being held next weekend in Wangi, NSW. There are currently 5 Nacra 15’s registered with local Victorian team, Jack Challands and Lachlan Hughes, being strong contenders for the win with their solid catamaran background.
Racing is set to commence at 1230 tomorrow with registration to open in the morning. Club Marine have returned to support this event and at registration will be providing each of the athletes with competitor show bags and bow stickers.
In addition to show bags, Australian Sailing sponsor, Zhik, will have a stall on site that competitors can purchase Zhik apparel and equipment.
All the action can be found on the Australian Youth Championships website www.youthchamps.org.au and on the Facebook Page www.facebook.com/AusYouthChamps/. Competitors are encouraged to use the social tag #vicyouthchamps in any posts they create during this event.
