Paris Van den Herik from Darwin Sailing Club has been awarded the 2016 Northern Territory Junior Scholarship.

The Scholarship is an initiative of Yachting Northern Territory, provided to encourage junior sailors competing at a national or international level.  The scholarship is open to all junior members of Australian Sailing affiliated sailing clubs and the winner for each club receives a grant of $500.

2016 Scholarship recipient, Paris Van den Herik is a member of the Darwin Sailing Club and was thrilled to be awarded the scholarship.

“When I applied for the scholarship I honestly didn’t think I would receive it,” Paris said.

“It was a really good feeling to receive the scholarship because I have been working really hard, especially building my fitness up to compete at the Laser Nationals.”

Sailing in the Laser Class at the Darwin Sailing Club and working as a Dinghy instructor at Darwin Sailing Club, Paris manages her passion for sailing and balances school work with minimal fuss.  She is always happy and eager to discuss what happened on the race course with other competitors and learn from the experiences on and off the water according to every around the Club.

“I started sailing when I was 10 and a couple of years later I did my assistant dinghy instructor course.  I love my job as a Tackers instructor, it is the best job in the world!” Paris said.

“I get to meet so many cool kids and seeing them develop and become confident in their sailing is awesome to be a part of.”

Paris shares her knowledge and in 2016 coached the Minnow Novice fleet during the Minnow Nationals in Darwin.  Paris not only coached Northern Territory sailors, but also assisted interstate sailors as well.  While coaching at this event, Paris produced instruction sheets and feedback to the sailors offering further advice when needed.

Paris recently represented the Darwin Sailing Club at the Harken Match Racing Championship in Sydney which was the first time a team from Northern Territory has competed in the event.

Now Paris is preparing for the Laser Nationals and Australian Youth Championships in Adelaide where she is aiming for a top five finish in her division.

“It would be unbelievable to do well at the two regattas in South Australia and progress to the Australian Sailing Youth Team but honestly I’m just working towards competing to the best of my ability and mixing it with the best sailors in Australia.”
