The 2016 City of Rockingham WA State Youth Championships concluded yesterday, 25 September, from The Cruising Yacht Club of WA.  This year’s event saw close to 120 sailors compete across 9 classes.

The strong winds from the camp, held from the 24 to 27 September, dissipated and a comfortable 10 – 15 knots was seen for the duration of the two day championship event. This made it possible for race management to get all seven races complete. It also made for good learning conditions for the select number of participants gaining their qualifications in mark laying and race management.

This year saw a change in location (where it was previously held further south) to The Cruising Yacht Club of WA, a great location for the public to get immersed in the sailing atmosphere.

The superb conditions on Mangles Bay, Rockingham, saw a fair and even battle between competitors. Axel Fleet had a strong joust with Jamie Bougher but was victorious in placing first in the Optimist fleet. Top placing 4.7 sailor at the most recent Laser World Championships, Finn O’Dea had a strong day one and was able to maintain that through the second day gaining him the top podium position.

Similarly in the Laser Radial fleet was Zac Littlewood who took out first place by 2 points to Caelin Winchcombe,

“It was really close racing between Caelin and I, we’re training partners so the racing is really nothing different to what we do at training. The coaching from Matt Wearn, Ryan Palk and Chris Charlwood during the camp was great and really helped progress my skills for the championships. It was also great to have the racing so close to shore where the public could see what was going on” said Zac.

Dean Caple, Club Services Officer for Australian Sailing and Event Coordinator, was proud of this regatta,

“This year’s regatta was a great success; we had two fantastic days on the water and we’re glad to see the move to The Cruising Yacht Club of WA. The Club’s support along with the volunteers, staff, coaches, parents and competitors made this a great event for everyone.

“This year we’re proud to have a national jury adjudicate this event, with three jury being on water for the regatta’s duration. We would also like to thank our sponsor, the City of Rockingham, for their support in promoting Rockingham, the sport of sailing and youth in sport to the public,” Dean said.
