Youth sailors planning on competing at the 2017 Australian Youth Championships can register online via the Australian Youth Championships website www.youthchamps.org.au.

The Notice of Race and Online Entries for the 2017 Australian Youth Championships have been released today. This year the event will be hosted by the Adelaide Sailing Club from the 10 - 14 January. Adelaide Sailing Club doesn’t shy away from hosting events with the 2017 Laser Nationals being hosted the week prior. Commodore of the Adelaide Sailing Club, Darren McPherson, believes it comes down to the Club’s facilities and dedicated volunteers that they are able to host such an event:

“Adelaide Sailing Club is very proud to have been selected to host the 2017 Australian Youth Championships. We’re ideally suited to major championships as we have a large grassed rigging area, we have safe launching areas and an on-site chandlery. Once launched we have wide open uninterrupted waters with largely on shore breezes.

McPherson continued, “Our Club has a long history with junior and youth sailors and are considered an important part of our Club culture. We’re looking forward to hosting both the Laser Nationals and the Australian Youth Championships here.”

Held annually and open to athletes aged under 19, the Australian Youth Championships is a selection regatta to secure a place on the Australian Youth Sailing Team. The 2017 Australian Youth Championships is one of two qualifying regattas, alongside the various Class Championships, that will constitute selection for next year’s team. In July 2017, the Youth Sailing World Championship will be held in Israel.

Classes invited to compete at the Australian Youth Championships this year include the Techno 293, Laser Radial, 420 and 29er. The Nacra 15 will be a selection class for the 2017 Youth Team with their qualification regatta being held in Lake Macquarie over the Easter weekend in 2017. This delay in class championship will provide the athletes more time to familiarise themselves with the newly introduced boat.

Australian Sailing CEO Matt Carroll is encouraging young athletes to take part in 2017, saying, “the Australian Youth Championship is the foremost youth sailing event on the annual calendar”.

I’m sure the team at Adelaide Sailing Club will provide a warm welcome and great facilities for young sailors, their families and friends to enjoy a tremendous week”, added Matt.

Entries for the Australian Youth Championships close on December 4 2016 with late entries being accepted up to 10 January 2017.
